A wealthy businessman has donated a college building to the city of Oxford which is deemed by many in poor taste due to the fact that it is a modern rendition of the Rajput Palace. All the same, the locals show their appreciation for the gift in a glorious celebration. Meanwhile, Inspector Morse (Thaw) and Sgt. Lewis (Whately) are busy investigating the murder of a journalist who was in the process of preparing an article that would possibly exploit the real motives behind the wealthy benefactor's kind gesture.
