If any group can rightfully stake their claim among such esteemed company, though, it?s the Canton Spirituals. Dating from the 1940?s with the original line-up featuring Harvey Watkins, Sr., to the present day when Harvey Watkins, Jr. assumes lead vocals, the quartet has enjoyed consistent success and universal appreciation for the past sixty years, perhaps the longest career of any gospel ensemble. Such a celebrated history can be attributed to the group?s ability to maintain their renowned southern sound while continuing to elevate their ministry to unparalleled heights. Using this time-proven formula, the Canton Spirituals are returning this summer to breathe New Life into the world of gospel music. Recorded live in Harvey, Illinois at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church this past spring, New Life: Live In Harvey, IL presents Watkins and background vocalists Wallace Strickland, Lee Floyd Johnson, Jr., and Merlin L. Lucious in all their melodic glory. Notable tracks include the smooth "That?s Enough," the divine homage "I Wouldn?t Be Satisfied" with special guest Bishop Neal Roberson, the crowdpleaser "I?m Doing Fine," the beseeching "Follow Me" and the surefire hit "Stronger" with vocal contributions from Paul Porter. Other notable cameo appearances include gospel diva Evelyn Turrentine-Agee and keeper of the southern quartet tradition, Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson, himself a fellow Verity artist.
