Kirk Douglas directs and stars as U.S. Marshal Howard Nightingale, a lawman with political aspirations who heads out to capture notorious bandit Jack Strawhorn (Bruce Dern) in hopes of garnering good press. The tables turn when Strawhorn takes Nightingale hostage and the Marshal's posse resorts to criminal acts to get the ransom money for his release. Released on the heels of the Watergate scandal, the film's commentary on political corruption was extremely resonant to 1970s audiences.
