The directorial debut of Hunter F. Roberts, independent production PLAYHOUSE combines black comedy with gory horror in a manner that recalls the early films of Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi. After the grisly murder of a theater director at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, sardonic Detective Black and two bumbling deputies are assigned to the case. As the investigation commences, the theater's students start dropping like flies, until it appears that the only possible solution to the case is a supernatural one. PLAYHOUSE combines inventive gore effects with visual and verbal jokes in a spoofing of the horror-film genre.
