In Mozart's early opera (he was 19 when he composed the music) IL RE PASTORE, Alexander the Great (Alessandro) has conquered Phoenicia and deposed the tyrant Sidon. Instead of taking the kingdom for himself, Alessandro appoints the rightful heir, Aminta, who has been living, oblivious to his status, as a simple shepherd. Aminta must grapple with his sudden ascension to power, and his love for the peasant girl Elisa. This production by the Academy of St. Martin In the Fields is led by Sir Neville Marriner and stars Angela Maria Blasi as Aminta (the part was originally composed for a castrato) and Sylvia McNair as Elisa.
