Julio, a painter, and his wife Soledad go to Paris, where Julio meets Esperanza, a woman who serves as inspiration for a painting. Even though Soledad suffers from psychological problems, she and Julio have a son, but when war breaks out in Paris, they return to Mexico. Julio runs into Esperanza again, and when he paints a portrait of her, Soledad destroys it in a rage of crazed jealousy. She is committed to a sanitarium on the recommendation of Dr. Salinas, a family friend. Julio and Esperanza discover that they love each other. Julio divorces Soledad, marries Esperanza, has a child with her and succeeds as a painter. Dr. Salinas cures Soledad, who escapes to search for her son and finds her home occupied by Esperanza. When she sees how happy her son is, she pretends to still be crazy so he can grow up happily with Julio and Esperanza.
